Dreame Aqua20 vs Ecovacs X8 Pro Omni: Steam Is a Show Floor, Not a Floor
Berlin got a steam robot. Your hallway still has last year’s mop pads.
At IFA 2026, Dreame put the Aqua20 Pro Ultra Roller X Complete on a stand and called it the company’s first steam robot vacuum with a roller mop. The PR, carried on Yahoo, is specific in the way show-floor copy is specific: 180°C steam from four outlets, hot-water mopping after the steam loosens the mess, a roller that extends about 8 cm, a four-step process that sounds like a car wash. Vacuum Wars listed 40,000 Pa and the HyperStream Detangling DuoBrush 2.0. TechRadar asked the only adult question in the hall: maybe this is a step too far.
PCMag’s 2026 roundup, meanwhile, already picked a machine you can buy. The Ecovacs Deebot X8 Pro Omni is the Editors’ Choice: 2-in-1 vacuum and mop, self-cleaning roller, obstacle avoidance, a dock that empties itself. Andrew Gebhart’s lab has been living with robot vacuums for more than a decade. That is a different kind of number than 180°C.
We already ran two Roborocks that shared 36,000 Pa and Saros 10R against Dreame X50 Ultra. This pair is the new trick versus the boring winner.
The Aqua20 is a kitchen argument
Steam on a robot is for dried sauce, not for dust. Dreame’s sequence — generate steam fast, dump it through four ports, then mop with hot water — is aimed at the spot you would otherwise stand over with a wand. If you do not have that spot, you are paying for a boiler you will turn off.
TechRadar’s hesitation is the right default. Steam wants heat, water, and a floor that can take both. Vinyl, some engineered woods, and anything with a wax finish are not a press-release surface. A roller that stretches 8 cm into a kickplate is useful. A 180°C jet next to a cabinet toe-kick is a support ticket.
Threshold climbing is the other IFA arms race. PCMag’s social clip on the Aqua20 mentioned 10 cm obstacle crossing. Roborock spent this show on 8.8 cm double-layer sills. If your house is a slab, none of that matters. If you have a 1990s sunken living room, it is the spec. Aqua20 does not get a win here until someone times it on a real sill, not a demo block.
Price is missing. Availability is “after IFA.” That is not a product. That is a booth.
The X8 is a maintenance argument
Ecovacs won PCMag’s 2026 list by being the machine that disappears. Self-emptying dock. Self-washing roller. Obstacle avoidance that is not a party trick in a studio apartment with chair legs. The roundup’s line is blunt: hands-off cleaning at a price that is not a joke.
You do not buy the X8 because it invented steam. You buy it because the weekly job is emptying a bin and washing a pad, and this one does both. Roller mops beat disc mops on dried dirt in every test video of the last two years. Ecovacs put that roller in a dock that cleans it. Dreame put steam in a robot nobody’s lab has scored.
If you have pets, the X8’s case is still the case PCMag has been making for the category: suction plus a mop that does not smear, plus a dock you ignore for weeks. If you have a toddler and pasta, the Aqua20’s case is theoretical. Theoretical does not beat a machine on a shelf at a retailer.
Spec theater versus a receipt
| Aqua20 Pro Ultra Roller X | Deebot X8 Pro Omni | |
|---|---|---|
| Status | IFA unveil | PCMag 2026 Editors’ Choice |
| Trick | 180°C steam + hot-water roller | Self-clean roller + self-empty |
| Suction claim | 40,000 Pa (listing) | Not the headline |
| Reach | ~8 cm extending roller | Standard premium 2-in-1 |
| You can buy it this week | No | Yes |
Pascal numbers are how this industry lies with a straight face. We already watched two Roborocks share 36,000 Pa and disagree about water. 40,000 Pa on a steam robot is a booth graphic. PCMag did not crown the X8 on Pa. They crowned it on whether the house stayed clean without a second career as a robot technician.
Reviewed’s IFA awards went to dishwashers and washers this year, not to another vacuum Pascal race. That is a hint. The floor-cleaning story at Berlin was heat and weird laundry. The story in a US apartment is still hair, crumbs, and a dock.
Who should wait, who should order
If your floors are sealed tile and you actually steam them by hand today, wait for Aqua20 reviews. Not first-looks. Pickup tests, moisture left on wood, and whether the boiler adds a failure mode the dock cannot fix. Steam that leaks is how you ruin a laminate plank.
If you want a robot this month, order the X8 Pro Omni or last year’s discounted flagship that already had a roller. The Aqua20 will still be “coming” while that one is emptying itself on a Tuesday.
Winner: Ecovacs Deebot X8 Pro Omni. It has a receipt, a lab, and a dock. Dreame’s steam machine can come back when those three exist. Until then it is a very hot brochure.
