Foldable phones have moved past the early adopter phase. The screens no longer break in the first six months. The creases are less visible. The prices, while still high, are starting to feel less like a ransom note. Google’s Pixel Fold 2 and OnePlus’s Open 2 are the two foldables that compete most directly on price, software, and camera quality. Both cost around $1,500. Both fold like a book into a tablet-sized screen. And both are good enough that choosing between them comes down to details.
Design and Hardware
The OnePlus Open 2 is thinner and lighter than the Pixel Fold 2 — 239 grams versus 257 grams, and 5.8mm unfolded versus 5.9mm. The difference is small on paper but noticeable in a pocket. OnePlus also managed to reduce the crease to nearly invisible levels, using an improved hinge design that opens flat with satisfying resistance.
The Pixel Fold 2 is wider when closed, giving the outer display a more normal phone-like aspect ratio. The OnePlus Open 2’s outer display is taller and narrower, which makes one-handed typing easier but feels slightly cramped for reading. Both have excellent build quality with aluminum frames and matte glass backs.
Google’s IPX8 water resistance rating beats OnePlus’s IPX4 splash resistance. If you use your phone in the rain or near the kitchen sink, the Pixel is the safer bet.
Displays
Both main displays are 7.6-inch OLED panels with 120Hz refresh rates. The OnePlus Open 2 has a peak brightness of 2,800 nits, which is visibly brighter outdoors than the Pixel Fold 2’s 2,200 nits. Both are sharp enough that individual pixels are invisible.
The outer displays diverge more. The Pixel’s 6.3-inch outer display feels like using a normal Pixel phone. The OnePlus’s 6.31-inch outer display has a taller, skinnier aspect ratio that some people find awkward and others find more ergonomic. Try both in person if possible.
Cameras
This is where Google flexes. The Pixel Fold 2 inherits the camera system from the Pixel 9 Pro, which means a 50MP main sensor, 48MP telephoto with 5x optical zoom, and a 12MP ultrawide. Google’s computational photography — Real Tone, Magic Eraser, Best Take — produces photos that look better than the hardware specs suggest.
The OnePlus Open 2 has Hasselblad-tuned cameras: a 48MP main, 64MP periscope telephoto with 3x optical zoom, and a 48MP ultrawide. In good light, the OnePlus takes excellent photos with natural colors and good dynamic range. In low light, the Pixel pulls ahead with better noise reduction and more accurate white balance.
For photography, the Pixel Fold 2 is the better foldable. It is not a landslide — the OnePlus Open 2 takes good photos — but Google’s processing advantage is real and consistent.
Software
Google’s Pixel experience is clean, fast, and gets updates first. The Pixel Fold 2 runs Android 15 with features designed specifically for the larger screen: a taskbar, split-screen app pairs, and app continuity that switches between the outer and inner displays seamlessly. Google promises seven years of software updates.
OnePlus’s OxygenOS 15 on the Open 2 has improved foldable optimization with Open Canvas multitasking, which lets you run up to three apps simultaneously with a clever resizing system. The software is less polished than Pixel’s in some areas — occasional animation stutters, less consistent third-party app optimization — but OnePlus’s approach to multitasking is genuinely innovative. OnePlus promises four years of Android updates and five years of security patches.
Google wins on polish and longevity. OnePlus wins on multitasking creativity.
Battery and Charging
The OnePlus Open 2 has a 4,800mAh battery with 67W wired charging that fills the phone in about 42 minutes. The Pixel Fold 2 has a 4,650mAh battery with 30W wired charging that takes about 80 minutes. Both support wireless charging.
Battery life is similar — both last a full day of mixed use — but OnePlus’s faster charging is genuinely convenient if you often find yourself needing a quick top-up before heading out.
Verdict
The Pixel Fold 2 is the better foldable for most people. The cameras are better, the software is more polished, the update commitment is longer, and the water resistance is reassuring. If you want a foldable that feels like a finished product, Google has figured it out.
The OnePlus Open 2 is the better foldable for power users and multitaskers. The Open Canvas system is the best implementation of foldable multitasking on any device. The faster charging is a real convenience. And the hardware is arguably nicer — thinner, lighter, with a less visible crease.
At similar prices, the choice is cameras and software (Google) versus hardware and multitasking (OnePlus). You will not regret either.
