Apple put iPhone 18 Pro on a stage on September 9. Google’s Pixel 11 Pro has been in reviews long enough that we already ran it against the 17 Pro and against Galaxy S26 Ultra. The pairing that was missing is this one: same 6.3-inch class, new Apple camera, old Google price.
Droid Life’s tables are the cleanest spec dump of the week. TechCrunch is the launch recap. Together they are enough to pick a phone without pretending we had both in a lab.
Winner: iPhone 18 Pro, if you were already in that $1,200 band. Pixel 11 Pro is still the one I would buy if the extra hundred dollars has to come from rent.
Price, size, weight

They are the same size class. Pixel is thinner, lighter, brighter, cheaper at the floor. iPhone is thicker, heavier, dimmer on paper, and the storage ladder is a mugging. 2TB at $2,399 is a product for people who refuse a laptop.
Pixel 11 Pro XL vs iPhone 18 Pro Max is a different fight: both start at $1,299, Max goes to $2,499, Pixel XL is 226g against Max at 249g. This article stays on the small Pros. If you want the phablet, the weight gap is the story, not the logo.
Round 1: Camera
This is why Apple held an event.
TechCrunch: 48MP Fusion main with a variable aperture, six thin blades, stops at f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, f/4.0, 24mm. Droid Life notes Samsung sort of tried this on Galaxy S9. On paper Apple takes the lead for stills flexibility. Low light can open up. Daylight can stop down for depth instead of faking it only in software.
Pixel 11 Pro’s main is 50MP octa PD, f/1.68, 82° FOV, 1/1.3-inch sensor. Google still lives on computational photography. That won a lot of years. A variable mechanical aperture is the first Apple hardware story in a while that is not “more megapixels.”
Video is still Apple’s house. TechCrunch cites 36 hours of video playback on 18 Pro and 45 hours on 18 Pro Max, plus a vapor chamber on A20 Pro. Playback hours are not recording hours, but they are a proxy for a battery and thermal package that Apple bothered to describe. Pixel reviews this year have been kinder on stills than on long 4K sessions.
If you shoot a lot of video, this round is not close. If you shoot night walks and hate Apple’s color, Pixel can still win the JPEG you actually post. For a 2026 Pro phone launched on camera, iPhone takes the round.
Winner: iPhone 18 Pro
Round 2: Display
Same 6.3-inch diagonal, both 1–120Hz. Pixel has more pixels, more ppi, 600 nits more peak. Outdoors that is a real difference, the same one we already used when Pixel beat iPhone 17 Pro on brightness.
Apple’s panel is not bad. 3000 nits would have been a flex three years ago. It is just not the spec they chose to win. They chose cameras and cooling. If your commute is a sunlit platform, Pixel is easier to read. If your commute is a subway, you will not care.
Winner: Pixel 11 Pro
Round 3: Performance and heat
A20 Pro vs Tensor G6 is a religion. Apple still leads the chip charts most years. Google still ships a modem and a Tensor that reviewers argue about. What is new is the vapor chamber TechCrunch called out, plus “a better battery design” without a watt-hour number.
I care about the chamber more than the brand. Last year’s Pro phones throttled in 4K and in hot cars. If Apple put a chamber in the 8.75mm slab, that is the $100. Tensor G6 with 12 or 16GB RAM is the spec that looks better in a table. RAM is not how iPhones have been losing.
Siri AI with on-screen context is English beta with iOS 27 this month. French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish in October, per TechCrunch. That is a software promise. Do not buy a phone for a beta assistant. Pixel’s on-device tricks are already in the unit you can purchase without waiting for a language pack.
Winner: iPhone 18 Pro, on cooling and the chip, with the assistant treated as a footnote.
Round 4: Battery and charging
Apple would not print a milliamp-hour figure in the TechCrunch recap. They printed video playback: 36 hours on Pro, 45 on Max. That is a marketing unit. It still beats “we improved the battery” with no number.
Pixel 11 Pro’s charging behavior in last week’s Galaxy comparison was the weak side against Ultra. Against iPhone, Pixel often wins wired speed and loses endurance. Until independent drain tests land on 18 Pro, treat Apple’s 36-hour video claim as a ceiling, not a workday.
If your day is maps plus camera plus a hot pocket, wait for a battery chart. If your day is messages and photos, both phones are fine and this round is a draw pretending to be science.
Winner: draw, with a lean to iPhone if the playback claim survives reviews.
Round 5: Money and lock-in
Pixel starts $100 lower and never offers 2TB. iPhone starts higher and then bills you for every jump. Burgundy replaced orange. That is not a reason to switch ecosystems.
If you have AirPods, a Watch, and a Mac, 18 Pro is the boring correct answer and this article cannot save you. If you have a Pixel Watch or nothing, the $1,099 Pixel is the phone that does not need a story about blades.
The foldable news the same day, iPhone Duo with an IP68 footnote that 9to5Google compared to Pixel Fold, is a different SKU. Do not mix it into this buy. Slab vs slab.
Winner: Pixel 11 Pro on the floor price. iPhone 18 Pro if you were going to pay Apple anyway.
Verdict
iPhone 18 Pro takes this because the hardware change is on the camera, which is the reason Pro phones exist. Variable aperture plus a vapor chamber is more of a generational step than another Tensor letter.
Pixel 11 Pro remains the brighter, lighter, cheaper 6.3-inch phone, and it is the one I would buy with my own card if I were not already carrying Apple IDs. It lost this pairing on the thing Apple actually launched.
If you own a 17 Pro, the upgrade is the blades and the cooling, not the diagonal. If you own a Pixel 10, 11 Pro is still the Google buy; jumping to 18 Pro is an ecosystem decision dressed up as a camera review.
What the tables hide
Droid Life’s Pixel vs iPhone grid is honest about RAM: Apple still will not print it. Treat that as a product decision, not a mystery. iPhone memory management has been good enough for years that the missing number is mostly a comparison-chart problem. It still matters if you keep 40 Chrome tabs and a 4K timeline. If that is you, Pixel’s 12 or 16GB is the printed answer.
Storage is the other hide. Pixel stops at 1TB. iPhone will sell you 2TB if you hate offloading video. Most people should not buy either ceiling. 256GB is the real phone. The $250–$400 jumps are how both companies fund the camera story. Apple’s jumps are steeper, which is why the $2,399 row exists: to make $1,799 look reasonable.
Colors are marketing and also how you find the phone on a table. Pixel’s matte Canyon and Olive read as “I bought a camera.” Burgundy on 18 Pro is the one Apple wanted you to remember from the keynote. None of this changes the aperture blades. If a store only has Silver, you are not losing a feature.
Thickness: 7.6mm vs 8.75mm. You will feel that in a pocket more than you will feel 7 grams. The extra millimeter is where a vapor chamber gets to live. People who chase thinness as a moral good will hate 18 Pro in a comparison photo and like it after a 20-minute 4K clip.
Who should ignore this winner
If you are on Verizon and already mad at Tensor modems, do not let a camera round talk you into another Tensor. Wait for radio reviews. If you need a headphone jack, neither phone cares. If you need a foldable, Duo and Pixel 11 Pro Fold are the IP68 footnote conversation, not this slab.
If you bought Pixel 11 Pro last month after the S26 Ultra piece, do not return it because Apple held a Tuesday event. You already chose the brighter cheaper slab. The blades are Apple’s problem to sell to Apple customers.
If you shoot for clients who demand ProRes and a color pipeline that matches last year’s iPhone, 18 Pro is the continuity play. Variable aperture is a bonus on top of a workflow you already have. Pixel would be a second camera, not a replacement.
The extra $100 is not a moral test. It is six aperture stops and a chamber, or a brighter panel and a lighter pocket. I picked the camera because that is what Pro means this week. Your pocket might disagree.
