The gaming handheld market has gone from one product to three genuine contenders in under three years. Valve’s Steam Deck proved the category could work. ASUS took the formula and added Windows and more power. Lenovo looked at both and said “what if it had a bigger screen and detachable controllers?”

All three are good. None is the obvious best for everyone. The differences come down to what you play, where you play it, and how much you are willing to spend.

The Steam Deck OLED starts at $399 for the base model and runs a custom AMD APU built on Zen 2 architecture with RDNA 2 graphics. Its 7-inch display runs at 1280×800 with a 60Hz refresh rate and peaks at 400 nits — modest by 2026 standards but tuned for battery efficiency. It ships with SteamOS, a Linux-based operating system purpose-built for gaming. Storage options range from 64GB to 512GB.

The ASUS ROG Ally X starts at $599 for the Z1 version and $799 for the Z1 Extreme. It uses AMD’s newer Zen 4 architecture with RDNA 3 graphics, driving a 7-inch 1920×1080 display at 120Hz and 500 nits. It runs Windows 11 Home, which means it can play anything a gaming laptop can — including Game Pass titles and games with anti-cheat software that does not work on Linux. It packs 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM at 6400MT/s and comes with 256GB or 512GB of NVMe storage.

The Lenovo Legion Go starts at $699. It shares the Ryzen Z1 and Z1 Extreme processor options with the ROG Ally but pushes the display to 8.8 inches at 2560×1600 resolution with a 144Hz refresh rate and 500 nits of brightness. Its RAM is faster at 7500MHz LPDDR5X, and its battery is larger at 49.2 watt-hours compared to the 40Wh packs in the Steam Deck and ROG Ally. It also has detachable controllers, making it function as a small tablet when undocked. Storage goes up to 1TB.

Performance: Raw Power vs Polish

The numbers are not subtle. The ROG Ally X and Legion Go, both running Zen 4 and RDNA 3, are a generation ahead of the Steam Deck’s Zen 2 silicon. In Cyberpunk 2077 with ray tracing set to Ultra, the ROG Ally X manages 9.6 frames per second. The Legion Go hits 7.9. Both are unplayable at those settings — ray tracing on a handheld is aspirational, not practical — but the gap is the point. The Steam Deck cannot run the test at all.

Dropping to more reasonable settings, the picture shifts. DiRT 5 runs at 30.9 FPS on the Ally X, 41 FPS on both the Legion Go and Steam Deck. You will spend time navigating tiny menus with a touchscreen or an analog stick pretending to be a mouse. Game launchers will pop up windows that you cannot close without awkwardly swiping from the edge of the screen. Driver updates arrive through separate utilities that do not talk to each other. ASUS and Lenovo both layer custom software on top — Armoury Crate for ASUS, Legion Space for Lenovo — to paper over the gaps, but the gaps are still there. If you have ever tried to use Windows without a keyboard, you know exactly how this feels. The tradeoff is compatibility. The Legion Go’s 49.2Wh battery gives it roughly 20% more capacity than the 40Wh packs in the Steam Deck and ROG Ally. In practice, this means an extra 15 to 25 minutes of gaming or an extra hour of video playback. The Steam Deck OLED’s lower-resolution display and more efficient APU partially offset the smaller battery, especially in 2D and indie games where it can stretch past three hours. If you mostly game near an outlet or on short commutes, the battery differences are academic. If you have a six-hour flight and forget your power bank, they are the entire game.

Who Should Buy Which

Buy the Steam Deck OLED if you want the most polished handheld experience, you mostly play single-player games from your Steam library, and you do not want to spend more than $400 to $550. The tradeoffs are real — lower resolution, limited compatibility, older hardware — but so is the experience. It is the only one of the three that feels like a gaming console rather than a small computer running games.

Buy the ROG Ally X if raw performance matters most, you need Windows compatibility for Game Pass or anti-cheat-heavy multiplayer games, and you are willing to deal with the friction of a desktop OS on a 7-inch screen. The Z1 Extreme version at $799 is the performance pick, but only if you will actually use the extra headroom. The base Z1 at $599 closes the gap with the Steam Deck’s price while keeping the Windows advantage.

Buy the Legion Go if you want the biggest, sharpest screen in a handheld, the detachable controllers appeal to you for tabletop gaming or media consumption, and you can stretch to $699 or more. The 8.8-inch 1600p display is genuinely impressive, and the larger battery gives it the best shot at lasting through a long session. The software is the weakest of the three, and the size makes it less pocketable than either competitor, but as a hybrid between a gaming handheld and a portable workstation, it does something neither of the others attempts.

No wrong answers. Just different compromises. The Steam Deck is the easy pick for most people unless Windows compatibility or screen size push you toward the alternatives. Once you know which compromise you are willing to make, the choice is straightforward. All three are capable of delivering the experience that seemed impossible five years ago: playing your Steam library on the couch, on a plane, or in bed, without needing to sit at a desk.
