AirPods 5 vs AirPods 4: ANC Is Standard. The Battery Is Not
Apple sold you ANC as a $50 upsell last year. This year it is the tax included.
On September 9, during the iPhone 18 Pro show, Apple announced AirPods 5. 9to5Mac and CNET agree on the money: $129 for the base pair with a USB-C case, $149 if you want the wireless-charging case, stem volume, and a bit more battery. Preorder that day. Ship September 18. Both SKUs have active noise canceling. The AirPods 4 made you pay extra for that.
PCMag’s comparison, dated September 10, calls the 4 obsolete. What Hi-Fi, a day later, is less impressed with the battery math. Both can be true. ANC at $129 is the reason to stop buying 4s. Four hours is the reason not to throw a parade.
Price is the only clean win
AirPods 4 with the ANC case topped out at $179 in PCMag’s telling. Base 4 without ANC was cheaper and worse on planes. AirPods 5 start at the old base price and include the feature you actually wanted. The wireless-charging 5 is $149, still under the old maxed-out 4.
If you do not own AirPods, the $129 5 is the default open-fit Apple bud. If you own base 4s and ride transit, the upgrade is the ANC, not the color. If you own 4s with ANC, the case for spending again is weaker. You are buying Apple’s claim of more canceling, IP57, and maybe stem swipe if you take the $149 SKU.
We already put AirPods Pro 3 against Sony’s WF-1000XM6 and against Nothing Ear 3. Pro 3 is still the silicone-tip product. 5 is the open-fit product. Do not mix the reviews. PCMag says 5 will not match Pro 3’s seal. That should not surprise anyone who has worn both shapes.
Two ANC numbers, one open hole
9to5Mac quotes 50 percent more noise reduction than AirPods 4. PCMag quotes Apple saying 5 blocks 150 percent more noise than the ANC 4. Those cannot both be a single measurement unless the baselines differ. Apple did not put a lab PDF in the launch posts these recaps used. Write both claims down. Believe neither until someone with a fixture repeats them.
Open-fit ANC is a compromise with physics. The bud sits in the bowl of the ear, not in the canal. It can knock down drone and HVAC. It will not knock down the person next to you the way a tip will. If your commute is a train, 5 may be enough. If your commute is a leaf blower, you wanted Pro 3 or a Sony with a seal.
Sennheiser versus Sony on cells is a different argument: replaceable batteries. AirPods are sealed. When the 5’s cells die, the product dies. Price the $129 against that lifespan, not against a forever accessory.
PCMag also flags IP57 on the 5. That is a better splash story than the 4. It is not a swimming product. Rinse them if you run. Do not shower with them because a marketing number felt high.
Battery: read the parentheses
What Hi-Fi’s numbers, with ANC on: cheaper 5 does 4 hours in the buds and 20 with the case. Wireless-charging 5 does 5 and 22. AirPods 4 with ANC advertised 30 hours with the case and ANC off. Once you align the flags, What Hi-Fi says there is probably nothing between the generations, and the 5 figures are disappointing either way.
CNET matches the 4 versus 5 hour split on the two 5 SKUs at moderate volume with canceling on. The extra $20 is, in large part, an hour and a coil.
If your day is two hours of podcasts, 4 hours is fine. If your day is a cross-country flight, you are living out of the case anyway. The case still has to be charged. Base 5 is wired USB-C. The $149 case does Qi and Apple Watch pads. People who already drop AirPods on a Watch charger will feel that. People who plug in at a desk will not.
H2 and Bluetooth 5.3 are carryovers from the 4. Spatial Audio, Conversation Awareness, adaptive audio, Find My: same family. Live Translation is on both 5 SKUs; on the 4 it was an ANC-model perk. If translation is why you were about to buy the old upsell, the $129 5 now includes it.
Stem volume lives on the step-up 5, like Pro. Base 5 still makes you get the phone out or talk to Siri. That is a worse daily tax than the missing coil for anyone who walks with gloves.
CNET says transparency sounds more natural. That is an Apple claim until a measurement site publishes a curve. Next-generation Adaptive EQ and “redesigned internals” are the same kind of sentence.
Who should still sit on 4s
You should not buy new 4s. Retailers will discount them. A cheap 4 without ANC is a worse $99 than a $129 5. A discounted 4 with ANC only makes sense if 5 is sold out through October and you need buds this week.
If you already own 4 ANC, wait for a proper isolation test. Fifty percent and 150 percent cannot both be your decision. IP57 and stem swipe (on the $149) are the concrete deltas. Swipe is a real control. Waterproofing is a real spec. “More ANC” is a press line.
If you already own Pro 3, 5 is not an upgrade. It is a second shape for people who hate tips. Some ears swell with silicone. Those people were the 4’s audience. They are now the 5’s audience, with canceling included.
Skip the 4 if you are gift-buying. The 5 ships September 18. A 4 in a drawer is how families collect dead cases.
Winner
AirPods 5, usually the $129.
You get the feature Apple used to meter, at the old base price, with a ship date this week. You do not get a better battery story. You do not get a seal. You do not get a user-replaceable cell.
Take the $149 only if you already charge on a pad or you want the stem slider. Do not take it for the extra hour unless that hour is the difference between your commute and a dead bud on the platform.
Specs next to each other
Put the two generations on one card, using only what the four recaps actually said.
AirPods 5 base, $129: ANC on both SKUs, USB-C case, 4 hours in the buds with ANC on, 20 hours with the case, Live Translation included, H2, Bluetooth 5.3, open fit, IP57 per PCMag, no stem volume, no wireless pad.
AirPods 5 with wireless case, $149: same canceling story, 5 hours in the buds, 22 hours with the case, Qi and Apple Watch charging, stem volume like Pro, otherwise the same open-fit product.
AirPods 4 base, historically cheaper, no ANC unless you bought the upsell. AirPods 4 with ANC: extra $50 in PCMag’s account, case life quoted at 30 hours with canceling off, Live Translation only on that SKU, maxed-out price $179.
Same chip family. Same spatial audio family. Same Find My. The 5’s “redesigned internals” and next-gen Adaptive EQ are Apple adjectives. They do not get a column until a measurement site runs them.
CNET noted the rumor that did not ship: AirPods Pro with tiny IR cameras for Siri visual tricks, maybe 2027. Do not wait for a camera bud if you need canceling on an open-fit pair this month. The 5 is the product on the table. It ships September 18.
Open fit versus the rest of the drawer
If the 4 never sealed your ear, the 5 will not either. People who bounced off Pro tips keep buying the stem shape because it does not ache after an hour. ANC on that shape is a gift. It is not Sony’s seal and it is not Pro 3.
If you commute with one ear out for traffic, Conversation Awareness and transparency matter more than the 50 versus 150 percent fight. CNET’s “more natural” transparency is the claim to test on a block walk, not in an echoey Apple Store.
Dead 4s on a gift table are how you get a relative on a model Apple is done pushing. If you are buying for someone else, 5 at $129 is the clean SKU. Skip engraving if it delays shipping past the week they actually travel.
What Hi-Fi is waiting on a pair in house. Until that review lands, treat sound as unknown. The 4 were fine for calls and podcasts and thin on weight. The 5 keep the same open shape, so expect the same tonal family plus whatever Adaptive EQ actually does. If you buy for music first, wait. If you buy for a commute with HVAC and a podcast, ANC-at-$129 is the decision and the rest is noise.
Find My on both generations is why people stay in the Apple case ecosystem after they lose a bud in a couch. That is not a reason to refresh. That is a reason not to mix a 5 left bud with a 4 case and then file a support ticket.
Apple also kept Personalized Spatial Audio on the 5. That feature needs a face scan you already did for the 4. It will not feel new. It will feel like the same head tracking with a firmware flag. If Spatial Audio made you sick on the 4, it will make you sick on the 5. Turn it off before you blame the new ANC.
Retailers will pile 4s next to 5s for a month. Read the SKU on the box. ANC or not. Wireless case or not. The old naming was already a trap. The new naming is simpler and stores will still screw it up.
Keep the 4 ANC you own until someone measures the new canceling. Buy 5 if you were going to buy 4 this month anyway. That is the whole comparison. The event was iPhone 18 Pro. The buds were the accessory that finally stopped charging extra for the obvious thing.
